The books I use to teach English

I have been once a book worm. I read alot to comprehend the lesson and knowledge I should teach to my students. The pressure to prepare well as a teacher has shaped my knowledge on the lessons. Here are some books I trust to be effective for teaching English.

1. Longman Preparation for the TOEFL PBT

This book/CD-ROM package gives students all the tools they need to succeed on the TOEFL® paper-based test. Providing both a comprehensive language skills course and a wealth of practice for all sections of the paper test, the Longman Preparation Course is appropriate for courses in TOEFL® test preparation or as a supplement to more general ESL courses. In the Student Book are Complete language skills instruction for skills tested on both the TOEFL® paper test and the Test of Written English. Longer reading passages that reflect the latest testing format. Diagnostic pre-tests and evaluation post-tests for each section that allow students to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Practice exercises for each of the language skills that maximize understanding and retention. Five complete Practice Tests that familiarize students with the actual test format and timing.

2. ARCO TOEFL Supercourse

This TOEFL book is packed with all the features that make the SuperCourses unique, this updated and revised reference offers the most comprehensive preparation available in book form. Includes lesson-by-lesson format, "walk-through" exercises, frequency lists of previous test items, and sample tests in both short and long form.

In my point of view, this TOEFL preparation book presents fundamental lessons especially on the grammar part. This book is considered old as it is very difficult to find in the market. As the demand for this book growing up. The publisher decided to renew with the third edition of it. This book has been used by most of local TOEFL test center to serve TOEFL test simulation and prediction as well as pre-test and post-test for the participating students in the learning center which offers TOEFL preparation course.

3. English Grammar Heineman

An intermediate ELT grammar reference and practice book which includes examples and explanations of form and usage, units that contrast different structures, revision units, and a 32-page test section.

I found this grammar book very comprehensive. Besides its pactical exercises, the image supporting the explanation of each grammar point helps students to better understand the grammar rule and principles. Obviously, learning English grammar is not as simple as memorizing grammatical rules instead of going through the usage with logical understanding to its application in daily language and situations. I use most of the exercises in this book to supplement my teaching materials. I love explaining to the students using the funny but comprehensive pictures in this book and students find it easy to understand the grammar focus.
