Can Smartphone Buy Your Happiness?

Today , all of people activities use smartphone. But, can smartphone actually give happiness to peoples? or just to make their work easier. Before talking about whether smartphone can give happiness for peoples, we need to know the definition of smartphone and happiness. Cambridge English Dictionary’s definition of “happiness” is a simple one: “The feeling of being happy.” And also there is a research from Hiram College in United States . The research suggests that happiness is a combination of how satisfied you are with your life (for example, finding meaning in your work) and how good you feel on a day-to-day basis. Now, what is smartphone ? a smartphone is a cell phone that allows you to do more than make phone calls and send text messages. Smartphone can browse the Internet and run software programs like a computer. There are a lot of smartphone apps including games, personal-use, and business-use programs that all run on the phone.

Based on the definition above , There is so much that we can do with a smartphone and so many different ways in which they play a key role in our daily activities. There are some benefits of smartphone in our daily activities such as Instan Communication (Whatsapp, Telegram, etc), Mobile Transportation (Google Maps), Social Media (Facebook, Instagram), Entertainment (Netflix), etc .

After performing a study on 414 students, researchers Bian and Leung on 2015 concluded that the more addicted a person is to their smartphone, the more likely he or she is to become lonely or shy. Smartphones are a social distraction in society according to Elise Hu , an American Broadcast Journalist. She asks the question, “How does the ubiquity of Smartphones affect interpersonal contact?”. Hu has taken a survey, among the younger generations, and posted their responses to this question in her article. These responses give personal experiences with Smartphones and how the phones are becoming a disruption to social and interpersonal interaction. Smartphone users are much more likely to interact with their Smartphones than to interact with other humans. Writer, Ellen Gibson refers to multiple psychologists’ opinions on Smartphones. People no longer want to have meaningful conversations in person. They would rather text or communicate over social media. Smartphones are making people so isolated and shy that they would rather sit at home on a Saturday night checking Twitter or Instagram than go out with friends.

I think smartphone can not buy our happiness because in the definition of happiness there is a keyword “your life” . And our life is not just about ourselves , but also about peoples around us . A smartphone is just a device to help us to stay connected with our friends and family when we’re far away, not when we’re close. By constantly checking smartphone , we will missing out on the most beautiful thing that life has to offer. We will lose our humanity. So, do you have another opinion? please comment below

Maybe I agree with this article.
There are possitive and negatif effect from this smartphone. But for me, smartphone is more negative effect than the possitive effect.

I have experience live on the dormitory.
In dormitory, I am not be able to use smartphone at week days. So we use smartphone just on weekend.
I feel like more productive and feel better when I am not use phone.

      1. Kevin Satria Bhagaskara

When I am not use smartphone, not just me there are all student of my school was not able to use smartphone on weekdays.
At first this rule is so bad for us, but after like 2-3 month. I can feel this situation is better than before.

  2. The smartphone makes it easier to do all things. But it can’t bring true happiness at all, in my life. Our life is not just about ourselves, but also about the peoples around us.

  3. Rohmad Rifai D4TEKKOMB

In my opinion, rather than being called happiness, using a smartphone is more towards convenience. And I think a tool can’t bring true happiness.

  4. Kechia Raharjo Putri D3KPLN

When i read the tittle of the article. I will answer without i read the point of article. I think my phone can make me happy. Because my phone can connect me with someone else

    1. Rohmad Rifai D4TEKKOMB

That is true. Also, we must be careful to use this smartphone because there is a possibility that what we think is good, will lead to trouble.

    2. Wisa Arbi Reaktanoe A

Yes, I agree with you, Ajie Dibyo. Because a smartphone is just a tool. The decision to use this tool for what will vary from person to person.

  5. Dian Nurmayasari

i agree with this. smartphone has two effects. positive and negative. and for me it’s more likely into negative ones. because smartphone can make you addicted to some stuff, like social media. to be honest, social media just made my anxiety grows bigger so i’m trying to took away from sns (social networking site). sometimes social media can break the privacy and it makes me scared. so i try to not using smartphone too often.

  6. smartphone more useful if you can use it wisely. many people blame the smartphone because it not make us productive. whereas, actually you are not productive because yourself, not because the smartphone. thanks

    1. Mohammad Ali RojaI

You’re right’s . Smartphones were originally made to make it easier for us in various ways. If someone blames a smartphone for making it unproductive , what actually makes it unproductive is yourself.

  7. Nurul Qomariyah

in my opinion, smartphones have positive and negative sides. but in the context of happiness, it can happen when it is really needed for healing, for example when i’m watching a religious video my heart will definitely feel calm and feel happy again. if the effect is to make someone anti-social in my opinion it is something different in context to happiness.

  8. Eky Bintarno Wicaksono D4TEKKOMA

There are many things that make us happy. I think happiness is not bought, but obtained. So, for me smartphone can’t buy our happiness.

  9. Reza Fauzi Augusdi

A smartphone can buy the happinesss and be the alternative meets for people who is being kept by distance. Somehow they will truly rely on it so it will make their life easier and be happy because of the smartphone’s existence.
And me as the person who lives far away from family, a smartphone is so helpful for me for at least keep connected with the famiily especially when I am in a such doubtful situation where I need a support from home. Indeed you are right, the social communication in real life shouldn’t be ignored because we have to deal with reality either 🙂

    1. That’s great messages Reza Fauzi. Totally agree with point that you’re saying smartphone could bring us happiness especially for people like us who kept by distance with our parents

    2. Wifda Muna Fatihia

You’re right, Reza. Keep in touch with our beloved people will be easier by using smartphone. Well, I can’t imagine how I am without this kinda technology while far from home.

    3. Wisa Arbi Reaktanoe A

Very good comment, Reza Fauzi. I also agree with your opinion that smartphones will be very useful for those of us who are away from home and want to contact the family.

  10. Inayah Surya Islami

my phone is also a stress reliever besides socializing with my friend or family. sometimes playing games and watching kpop, kdramas, and movies can make my mood up.

    1. Kevin Satria Bhagaskara

Maybe you are true, but I think it is not the real happiness.
There something better out there than smartphone to make you relieve your stress.

  11. Aris Styo Alfandi

Actually smartphone are very useful when used positively. But for me the smartphone doesn’t bring me happiness, especially the loss of family time. Even with smartphone, we might always compare the achievements of others with ourselves.

    1. Reza Fauzi Augusdi

      You are right.
Too much scrolling the timeline and see how’s people or friends do out there with their current achievement sometimes a bit worry me more since I am comparing myself with them. But as we have to keep in mind, none would post such a sorrow or gloomy things on social media, social media is just for people who show off happy good things 🙂 yet they may experience a shameful events behind as well as we do but not posted it.

    1. Nurrudin Azzaky

Same here. I can’t survive without my phone. I bring this every where and every time. Everyone is different, but for me, I never catch bad sides. I always filter what I get, so I won’t be depressed

  12. Dicha Nada Puspita D4 Tekkom A

All kind of happiness is temporary. Smartphones, games, foods, money. The only thing that can make you happy is yourself! You see, especially when you can be your true self around your special person. But, we can’t expect our special person or people to always be good. All has good and bad sides. Sometimes they can make you feel happy, sad, mad, strong or weak! Just trust yourself, when you feel like you’ll be happy after playing game, then play game! When you feel like you’ll be happy after eating food, then eat! When you feel like you’ll be happy if you meet someone, then meet them!

It’s you, who decide to find your happiness!

    1. Wifda Muna Fatihia

Woaah, I absolutely agree with your opinion Dicha! It’s ourselves who decides happiness in life. Every single thing make us happy comes from what we do, right?

  13. Mohammad Hasan M. B.

i think smartphone is tools that could help you gain some happiness. kind of same like money. yes it will not give you all happiness directly by having the latest model of smartphone or having a lot of money. but with smartphone you can do all things that help you feel happy and enjoy your life, such as facetime your beloved one, come to virtual art shows, etc.

    1. Mohammad Hasan M. B.

but in some cases, smartphone will give you nothing but hate and sadness if you’re not aware and do some filtering of the content you consuming.

  14. Dea Amalia Rahmawati

Maybe happiness is relative. But for me, phone have two sides. They can give more information and make everything easily like e-money, buy tickets and atc

  15. Ratna Anisa Ramadani

I think so.. everyone’s happiness could be gotten from different points. There are some people feel happy when they eat, play, buy something, get money, and etc. Smartphone is just a device. Sometimes, there is benefit from it, but sometimes also there is bad effect. In fact, it depends on the user.
Because, for me, I think smartphone can bring happiness althought it is just small thing. Like reading quotes and chatting with my old friend.

    1. Hallo, ratna. Yes, I agree with your statement. Smartphone is just a device, it can bring a happiness for who addicted in smartphones. But for me, the smartphones can not buy our happiness.

      1. Aris Styo Alfandi

Yes, Nia, I agree with you. I think smartphone can’t give you happiness and can’t buy happiness. But it can’t be helped that we live in modern times which certainly need smartphones all the time for communication and in any case.

  16. Moch. Thoriq Alfaridzi

For me, smartphone can be both usefull and bring happiness for me. Since smartphone sometimes gave me something to be entertained for when I was having a mental breakdown. But of course there is a side effect for me for using smartphone frequently.

      1. Aris Styo Alfandi

Hello, thoriq… I advise you to eat some boiled carrots. Eat this food in the morning and if it is not comfortable, you can make carrot juice regularly.

  17. Everyone have their opinion about happiness. All happiness are valid. For me, happiness is ability to be grateful for the simplest thing in live. I think the happiness is priceless, even smartphone.
But smartphones can be one of the source of happiness, e.g: when we got a message from our crush, got video calls for our parents.

    1. Other than that, smartphone could help spreading some things, like charity or social works, to give us more “meaning” in life. Can the smartphone buy happiness? No. Because happiness are priceless and limitless, but smartphone can help us to find our happiness

        1. Totally Agree Mohammad Hasan. The tools like smartphone somehow could be the simplest way to find happiness. And it’s okey for us for being happy with simplest things

  18. Ridho Azhar Megantara

a smartphone that allows you to do more than make phone calls and send text messages.smartphone can browse the internet and run softwere program like a computer.

  19. Mahaputra Ilham Awal D4TEKKOMA

The point of this article is how to control technology, especially the smartphone in our lives. Nice information Satria, Thank you for sharing

      1. Halo, zakia. My name is Nurul Anniyah from 3D3EA. Yes, I agree with you. Besides the smartphones have advantages, maybe we are so busy to spend our time with smartphone. But, we need remember that we also need spend our time with our family and friends. Because those who are always there when we are happy and sad. 🙂

    1. Kevin Satria Bhagaskara

Yes absolutely right, the solution to use this modern technology like smartphone or each other to be use wisely is we must to control ourselves.
About our times, healthy, social interaction, and the other.

  20. Dinda Ayu Yunitasari

I think smartphone can’t buy happiness. Maybe just as a distraction if you feel bored, but if you use it continuously you will also get bored. Happiness in my opinion comes from anywhere and I don’t think smartphone can do that.

  21. Absolutely no, but in fact we can find happiness in smartphone. For example, when we are tired, we can watching movie, or surfing in social media or anythings that can entertain us.

  22. Novanna Rahma Zani

There’s so much things get me to happiness and smartphone is the such one. I can’t say that smartphone buy me happiness but that things helped me in any activity.

    1. Novanna Rahma Zani

I realized that smartphone makes life easier, communication, entertain, even study we can do with it. On some side maybe it can be changed by smartphone but too much spend time with them looks so bored.

  23. Novaren Veraldo

Well, I already enjoy my life with the help of my smartphone. I can actually help other people too with the smartphone, and I think I’m happy enough with it ^^

  24. Hallo, thank you for your article. But I don’t agree with you about the smartphones can buy our happiness. Indeed our daily lives may not be separated from our smartphones, but of course our daily lives do not always depend on smartphone. For example, we can read books directly without going through smartphone. Because with the development of any development of any technology related to smartphone. Okay that’s all for me and have a nice day! 🙂

      1. Erica Rianindi Yulfanti

Then the disadvantages, we can lose track of time, easily receive hoax news, lack of direct interaction between friends, neighbors and much more. But it all depends on how the person uses it.

          1. Erica Rianindi Yulfanti

Yes Nia, many people are addicted to games, especially children. There have been several cases of game addiction and eventually hospitalization or therapy.

        1. Erica Rianindi Yulfanti

Thank you, very true Nia. Actually there are many benefits of smartphone. From smartphone we can also get money by selling, becoming a YouTuber or something.

          1. Erica Rianindi Yulfanti

            Thank you Silfi.
I totally agree with your last comment. Don’t let us neglect our famillies, no matter how busy we are, don’t forget to take the time to gather with family.

  25. i don’t agree with you, because in my opinion there are always positif and negative about anything. we cannot conclude in just one side because that would seem hypocritical. because based on realuty right now example : in social, economy life, communicating and etc. cannot be separated from the use of gadget every day.

    :)) thank you. cheezzz..

  26. Vina Tri Hartini

I think smartphone can’t buy our happines, but it provides a lifetime of satisfaction. for example when we want to make something, but don’t know how. we can use a smartphone to find tutorials, so that our work is done.

    1. I don’t agree with you if you say smartphone can provide a lifetime of satisfaction, because in my opinion smartphone is just a tool used by us for convenience or entertainment only , I think the one that can provide a lifetime of satisfaction is if we can get a good partners for life 😆😆😁

  27. Wafa Adil Robbani

In my opinion, by using a smartphone, we can actually get happiness more easily by looking for something interesting for us, for example I can be happy by watching a video about racing, because I love racing, just watching racing videos on a smartphone makes me happy

  28. I agree with you. I think maybe it’s true that smartphones can’t buy happiness. Smartphones are only to help us do activities, but besides that it can be used as entertainment when bored. Smartphone can have a good impact, but they can also have a bad impact on their users.

  29. I agree with you. Smartphones have become a must-have item for everyone. Not only adults and teenagers use it. Even a 5 year old child can operate it. Its features are growing and growing. However, smartphones not only provide happiness, they can also have a bad impact on users.

    1. Yes, you are right niko. Sometimes I feel sad that children have been introduced to smartphones. As the result they can not be separated from smartphones. They start to get addicted, sometimes being attrached to features on smartphones such as seeing videos they like. And there are also toddlers who have been shown with smartphones, the most feared think is that they can not be separated from the smartphone and will have a negative impact if there is no assistance from their parents.

      1. Yes Nia, parents must be good examples for their children and be the foremost protection against all technological advances. So that children are not negatively affected by technological developments.
