Today , all of people activities use smartphone. But, can smartphone actually give happiness to peoples? or just to make their work easier. Before talking about whether smartphone can give happiness for peoples, we need to know the definition of smartphone and happiness. Cambridge English Dictionary’s definition of “happiness” is a simple one: “The feeling of being happy.” And also there is a research from Hiram College in United States . The research suggests that happiness is a combination of how satisfied you are with your life (for example, finding meaning in your work) and how good you feel on a day-to-day basis. Now, what is smartphone ? a smartphone is a cell phone that allows you to do more than make phone calls and send text messages. Smartphone can browse the Internet and run software programs like a computer. There are a lot of smartphone apps including games, personal-use, and business-use programs that all run on the phone.
Based on the definition above , There is so much that we can do with a smartphone and so many different ways in which they play a key role in our daily activities. There are some benefits of smartphone in our daily activities such as Instan Communication (Whatsapp, Telegram, etc), Mobile Transportation (Google Maps), Social Media (Facebook, Instagram), Entertainment (Netflix), etc .
After performing a study on 414 students, researchers Bian and Leung on 2015 concluded that the more addicted a person is to their smartphone, the more likely he or she is to become lonely or shy. Smartphones are a social distraction in society according to Elise Hu , an American Broadcast Journalist. She asks the question, “How does the ubiquity of Smartphones affect interpersonal contact?”. Hu has taken a survey, among the younger generations, and posted their responses to this question in her article. These responses give personal experiences with Smartphones and how the phones are becoming a disruption to social and interpersonal interaction. Smartphone users are much more likely to interact with their Smartphones than to interact with other humans. Writer, Ellen Gibson refers to multiple psychologists’ opinions on Smartphones. People no longer want to have meaningful conversations in person. They would rather text or communicate over social media. Smartphones are making people so isolated and shy that they would rather sit at home on a Saturday night checking Twitter or Instagram than go out with friends.
I think smartphone can not buy our happiness because in the definition of happiness there is a keyword “your life” . And our life is not just about ourselves , but also about peoples around us . A smartphone is just a device to help us to stay connected with our friends and family when we’re far away, not when we’re close. By constantly checking smartphone , we will missing out on the most beautiful thing that life has to offer. We will lose our humanity. So, do you have another opinion? please comment below
